Do you like our moon? Well guess what, Earth has another one! Astronomers have recently spotted a new moon. This new moon is very, very tiny, this cute mini-moon is called, 2020 CD3.

According to Earthsky,”a tiny new moon apparently captured into Earth orbit three years ago.” Earthsky got this information from MPC- Minor Planet Center, and they revealed on February 25th, that our world has a new moon. However, the mini moon was discovered on February 15 by the Catalina Sky Survey. This little, tiny moon is estimated to be about 6 to 12 feet in diameter! So small!

According to NYTimes, Kacper Wierzchos and Theodore Pruyne, were the ones to discover 2020 CD3. Nytimes wrote that Dr. Wierzchos said, “It didn’t seem to be any different than the other near-Earth asteroid that we discover, except that it was found to be orbiting Earth instead of the sun”. Unfortunately, this won’t be going on for too long. NYTimes states, “More observations will help astronomers determine when it arrived. But it is expected to leave Earth’s orbit in about two weeks”. Before this little moon there was another one just as amazing. According to NYTimes, “The previous moonlet orbited Earth in 2006 and 2007 before rejoining its fellow asteroids. Some observers initially thought that object, designated 2006 RH120, was a piece of a rocket booster from the Apollo 12 mission, but astronomers eventually determined it was a rock. It’s expected to return in August 2028.” So hopefully, 2020 CD3 will come back to us just like 2006 RH120 will.
