According to phys.org, on the 21st of December, from our point of view on Earth, Jupiter and Saturn will align to form a point of light. Jupiter and Saturn actually have alignments about every 20 years. 

However, the difference with the alignment of the two planets this month is that this alignment would be the closest they’ve been since almost 800 years ago. They usually don’t appear to be as close. 

The “star” is referred to as the “Christmas Star”, or “Star of Bethlehem”. 

When Jupiter and Saturn, the two largest planets of our solar system, align, it will look like one big star. Since the alignment of the two planets “create” a star near the holidays, that is where the alignment got its name from.

Adding onto the specialty of the event, December 21st marks the Winter Solstice when daylight starts to get upon darkness.
