On Oct. 27, 2022, Elon Musk made history by buying Twitter for $44 billion. Due to his takeover, there have been many changes to the social media company. As the new owner, Musk began to thin out Twitter’s workforce by giving employees a deadline to decide whether they wanted to work for him or not. Consequently, he ended up getting rid of half of Twitter’s 7,500-person workforce, thousands of contractors, and three top executives. Musk claims his version of Twitter will promote more freedom for users, but there has already been a lot of backlash and controversy surrounding these new changes. Reports have shown that slurs and hate speech have risen dramatically, though the CEO denies this. Another big move Musk made was allowing former President Donald Trump to return to Twitter after being permanently banned. The Twitter owner also brought back rapper Kanye West, but soon suspended him for hate speech. With all of these changes, people have had many mixed feelings about Twitter’s new owner. Since Musk’s takeover, more than a million users have left the social media platform while others wait nervously to see what will happen next.
