On Friday, September 28, 2018, a  7.5 magnitude earthquake struck the city of Palu. Following this event, a tsunami smashed into Sulawesi island in Indonesia. Authorities believed that the waves of this tsunami were about 16 feet high, but bystanders watching this event claimed that the waves were even higher. It is also unknown if everyone evacuated the area in time. However, families were reported missing according to The Associated Press. In this tragedy, 540 people were injured, and 29 are still missing. The earthquake was at a depth of six miles, about 48 miles north of Palu. The earthquake occurred along a fault about 50 miles long. Authorities say that Palu’s airport would be closed until Saturday evening because of damage produced by the multiple earthquakes. Numerous earthquakes have struck the region in recent months. One of the biggest was a  6.9 magnitude earthquake that hit Lombok and the Gili islands which is located southwest of Sulawesi on August 5, killing more than 450 people.

Update: 1,234 people have been confirmed dead now, and the numbers are certain to rise. To prevent the spread of diseases, authorities have started to bury many of the dead bodies in mass graves. Even now, at Undata Hospital, more than 100 corpses are still lying in the yard, outside of the hospital, days after the initial quake. The stench of rotting flesh is overpowering. According to the hospital’s director, Dr. Komang Hadi Sujendra, one facility alone had received more than 200 bodies. It is estimated that 2.4 million people have been affected by this event. Another 800 people were badly injured and more than 61,000 people have been displaced. The region has been hit by 254 aftershocks as of 11 AM on Monday.
