In Mrs. Vandergrift’s 8th grade ELA class, students took part in a philosophical chairs discussion in which they shared their views on if they think that people wearing any costume on Halloween should be allowed. It was a neutral point of view.

But this discussion has not only been discussed in Mrs.Vandergrift’s class, but has been talked about all over the world. According to a poll conducted by Dcentric.wamu.org, five hundred and fifty nine people think that it’s fine to dress up as whatever they want and 295 don’t think it’s fine.

A student at Elon University wrote an article addressing this situation. He was completely against it and wrote that “people wearing costumes of other cultures is just racist and offensive, even if those people do not mean to be offensive. He also said by doing this, people are hurting other people’s beliefs, genders, and sexualities. If people are mocking the dances or accents of the cultures costume by wearing certain costumes, then it’s gone too far and can really hurt people.

Not all people think it’s inappropriate. According to Washington Post, Megyn Kelly argues that the purpose of Halloween is to dress up as someone other than yourself. Another point is that people should not take Halloween so seriously. Many people just want to have fun and don’t want to mock the cultures. For example, kids do not know when they are making fun of cultures, so it’s not their fault. Some younger kids might also not know what cultures are and might not know that they are mocking certain cultures.

Halloween is a fun holiday and everyone should enjoy it. Everyone should have the right to dress up as whatever they want, but it should not be appropriate and not cross the line between fun and hurtful. Overall, Halloween should be fun, but kids should take some responsibility to be political correct to all cultures.
