An important icon of Halloween is the Jack-o-Lantern. Every year, on this spooky holiday, millions of kids around the globe carve scary and funny faces into pumpkins and put a candle inside of it. But it did not always start like that. In fact, people did not carve into pumpkins at all. It all started, according to huffingtonpost.com, with a man named Stingy Jack. This man, named Jack, found a coin in the shape of the devil, which contained the devil himself. And all the time, Jack would torment the devil inside of the coin. When it was time for Jack to die, God would not accept him, but neither would the devil. He was left to roam the earth for all of his time. He was given only a burning coal for night, so Jack put it inside of a turnip to create a light. So, Irish people started doing the same, putting a candle inside of a vegetable, which soon evolved into a pumpkin.
