Energy drinks are great at keeping a person up on a late night of studying, late night at work, or even a late night road trip! The purpose of these drinks are meant to boost one’s energy, alertness, and concentration. Although these drinks seem like they are helping, they may have various negative effects to the health of someone as well.

Common energy drinks such as Red Bull, AMP, Monster, and 5-Hour Energy are typically made of sugar, B Vitamins, Amino acid derivatives, Herbal extracts, and most importantly, caffeine in order to boost a person’s functions. According to Healthline, “Multiple studies confirm that energy drinks can indeed improve measures of brain function like memory, concentration and reaction time, while also reducing mental fatigue.” The drink may be beneficial for tired students, overworked night shift workers, and late night drivers, improving their brain function, however, it could possibly be detrimental to their heart health in the long run.

Energy drinks can improve brain function but it also contributes to heart problems. According to Healthline, “One review showed that energy drink use has been implicated I several cases of heart problems, which required emergency room visits.” Because energy drinks are essentially a drug, altering the natural body functions, as always, too much is not good. When too much of the drink is consumed, the blood pressure and heart rate of the consumer increases and the blood vessel function decreases. This is possible if someone were to consume three or more at a time or mix them with alcohol. The abuse of this drug can cause various heart problems or diseases. In order to stay healthy, a person should consume moderate amounts of energy drinks occasionally and heart disease is unlikely in their future.

In conclusion, energy drinks may seem beneficial and healthy because it improves the brain function and energy which are great for tired students, workers, and drivers, but, it also may be harmful. Heart diseases and conditions are likely with the abuse or over drinking of this drug or energy drinks. So always remember to drink energy drinks moderately and occasionally in order to avoid these frightening issues.
