     IPads have become a normal item to see in a person’s daily life. The technology has many uses such as gaming, entertainment, and drawing. Although the small device may look simple at first glance, when it is inspected down to the software and hardware, it is evident that lots of progression happened for it to reach the stage that it is in currently.

     The idea of a portable tablet was around since the mid-twentieth century. In 1964, the Rand Corporation produced the Rand Tablet, one of the first digital tablets that were available and it was about eighteen thousand dollars. In perspective, if the tablet were to be purchased today, it would cost approximately $146,155.35 to buy. It was a device that had a screen and a drawing surface which could be drawn on with an electric stylus to create an image. It may have seemed more convenient to use for modern people, but it was only available to research facilities. Also a new technology was on the rise, making almost no one purchase the tablet. According to howstuffworks.com, people turned to a cheaper option which involved a mouse, a keyboard, and a screen. Although this technology took over the market, this did not stop several different companies to attempt to create a more efficient tablet. Howstuffworks.com states that no models ever made a hit on the market until January 27, 2010 when Apple released the iPad, a portable device that costed around five hundred dollars. Between its release and 2012, over one hundred million iPads were sold. It was a huge success that made touchscreen devices popular.

     There is a vast amount of mechanism that lies behind the IPad. Like, the iPhone, the iPad proposes a home button and a touch screen. Most of its weight comes from the large battery that is located inside the iPad. According to Howstuffworks, since the release, Apple has attempted to reduce the weight of the iPad drastically. Newer versions include better screens and lighter weights. An iPad uses an LCD panel and an IPS, or in-plane switching. These are important to an iPads display. Like laptops, iPads have processors, a memory storage, a screen, and a battery. iPads run on SoCs, or systems-on-chips. The SoCs contain both the GPU and the CPU in a single unit that is very powerful but also very compact and small. The iPad contains many other features such as a camera.

      Although it may be small, the iPad yields incredible power. Much history and innovative mechanism has transformed this once rare device into a popular everyday norm.
