Last post-season ended in dramatic fashion. The previous Stanley Cup winner, the Pittsburgh Penguins, faced the Washington Capitals in the semi-finals. Washington, who had never gone on to the Conference Finals, help up their own against the Penguins, in a hard-fought seven game battle. Washington went on to win the cup that year, leaving teams like Columbus, Pittsburg, and the Lightning in the dust. However, one of the best teams currently in the NHL, the Pittsburgh Penguins, may not be a part of the 2019 playoffs.

The Penguins just got off of a four game losing streak, as they have previously done several times in the midst of this season. Sidney Crosby, NHL superstar and Penguins captain, stated “We need to leave it all out on the rink. It’s now or never.” Currently sitting fourth in the Metropolitan division, it is going to be a battle that the Penguins may not be able to win. In their team history, the Penguins have qualified for six Stanley Cups, and have won five Stanley Cups. Due to the fact that many other teams have not won the Stanley Cup, it makes the Pittsburg Penguins’ dynasty all but more impressive. A few years back, the Penguins won back-to back-cups, meaning the thought of them not making the playoffs just does not sit right with me. I believe they will make the 2019 playoffs, but they will not acquire the home ice advantage, making their Stanley Cup run more stressful. The home ice advantage favors the teams that do the best in the regular season.

With players like Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, Phil Kessel, Matt Murray, Jake Guentzel, and Kris Letang, I think it is safe to say that the Pittsburgh Penguins definitely have enough firepower to push their way to the Stanley Cup. Well, as long as they make the playoffs first.
