On April 7, 2024, in Cleveland, Ohio, the March Madness Women’s championship game took place with Iowa and South Carolina facing off. There was a lot of hype about Iowa’s guard, Caitlin Clark, leading up to the start of the game. Her team, the Iowa Hawkeyes, went against South Carolina’s Gamecocks, but ended up losing. When the game began, Iowa was ready and Clark came out strong, scoring 18 points in the first quarter. This gave Iowa the lead with 27-20. But South Carolina fought back, and by the end of the second quarter, the team was leading 49-46. For the remaining time, the Gamecocks continued to pull ahead, and finally, when the clock ran out, South Carolina came out victorious with a score of 87-75.
The two top scorers were South Carolina’s guard, Tessa Johnson, with 19 points, and Clark with 30 points. The win was a big deal for South Carolina because they ended their season undefeated and gave Coach Staley her third national championship. For Clark, this was a particularly important moment for her as it was the last college game she would ever play. The point guard was eligible to stay another year due to the pandemic but decided to enter the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA). On April 15, 2024, Clark signed with the Indiana Fever.
