Should Schools Keep Detention?

Should+Schools+Keep+Detention%3F

Although many students believe detention is useless, it is an important factor of the school. Detentions are an effective way to change a student’s poor performance and will help students reflect on the actions they have done.

Punishing the students for their wrong actions would have a better effect than not doing anything about it. By providing a clear consequence after a student misbehaves, students will be held accountable for their actions and learn to improve. Without detention, students would make bad choices without fear of getting any type of ramifications.

Some say that schools should not have detention because it can cause negative effects in children such as higher rates of depression, anxiety, and other mental health conditions. Although this can be true, detention can be formatted in different and productive ways. For example, it can be an alternate opportunity for homework help,  a moment for self-reflection, counseling, and more.

Detention serves to help students make amends by taking responsibility for their actions and learning from their behavior. It also helps maintain a positive learning environment within the school. Detention is needed to minimize chaos on campus.

Grace Chun
Grace Chun, Contributor
Grace Chun was born on December 16, 2010. The day when the last episode of Larry King Live aired, a TV program that was one of CNN’s most watched. Grace lives with her parents as well as an older brother in OC, Fullerton. She likes to spend her free time lazing in her bed, hanging out with friends, and watching. Grace also loves to go snowboarding, asking her parents to go to the mountains on the weekend every chance she gets during winter. As for her future, she is not exactly quite sure what she wants to do with so many options around her but, she has been thinking about going to the same college her dad went to, UCLA. A quote she keeps in her mind is “In three words I can sum up everything I've learned about life: it goes on.” -Robert Frost. She keeps this quote in her mind as Grace faces lots of challenges and problems that weigh her down in life but no matter what happens life is going to go on.
Kaylynn Shin
Kaylynn Shin, Contributor
Kaylynn Shin was born on September 2, 2010, the same date when the Israel and Palestine conflict occurred. Kaylynn’s family consists of her mom, dad, two older brothers, and a pet cat. Although she has two older brothers, both of them are either already in college or getting ready for college, so Kaylynn is usually like the “only child” of her household. She is a Korean-American, who spent most of her lifetime living in Fullerton, California. In Kaylynn’s free time, she loves doing countless amounts of things. One thing she does most of her time is listening to music, most of the time it is R&B and K-Pop. When she isn’t listening to music, Kaylynn loves watching Asian dramas, some being: When I Fly Towards You and Twinkling Watermelon. Taking naps is something Kaylynn does every day after school. She also plays video games with her friends in her free time. Since the age of four, Kaylynn grew up rock climbing with her dad and took many classes. But when the pandemic started, she stopped rock climbing. Kaylynn is not much of an athlete, but she enjoys playing tennis with her friends. In the future, Kaylynn wants to attend a spontaneous college and become an interior designer. One goal that Kaylynn wants to pursue is that when she makes enough money, Kaylynn wants to travel around the world with her loved ones and explore the many different cultures. One inspirational quote that she focuses on is: “Only those who have regrets will want to go back.”
