On March 10, 2024, the 96th Academy Awards took place at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles. Jimmy Kimmel hosted the Oscars ceremony yet again and helped recognize the year’s best films. For the “Big Five” awards, Best Picture went to “Oppenheimer,” Best Director went to Christopher Nolan, Best Actor went to Cillian Murphy, Best Actress went to Emma Stone, and Best Screenplay went to “American Fiction” and “Anatomy of a Fall” for adapted and original script.
This year’s Oscars garnered a lot of attention for different reasons. Firstly, films were required to meet different Inclusion and Representation standards to qualify such as having main actors from underrepresented racial or ethnic groups. And in order to win the top prize, Best Picture, films were required to meet two of the four inclusion standards. Some supported this new change as it aims to promote more diversity, while others feel the initiative is forced and insincere. Besides the actual awards, some other standout moments that got viewers talking were Ryan Gosling’s performance of “I’m Just Ken” and Billie Eilish’s second Oscar win at 22 years old. Overall, this year’s Oscars were humorous and entertaining.
