Laufey Lín Bing Jónsdóttir, famously known as Laufey, is an Icelandic-Chinese singer who influenced a whole generation to love jazz. Laufey was born on April 23, 1999, in Reykjavíc, Iceland, alongside her twin sister Junia. Growing up, she was exposed to classical and jazz music which led her to learn both the piano and the cello. In 2018, she graduated from Reykjavíc College of Music and then went on to attend Berklee College of Music, which she graduated from in 2021.
She is a fairly new artist, as she released her first song in 2020. A couple of years later, she released “Valentine” which immediately went viral and has now garnered over 155,000,000 streams. At the 66th Annual Grammy Awards, Laufey won for Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album for her album “Bewitched.” With this album, along with her other music she wanted to refresh jazz and reframe it for a Gen Z audience. Jazz has been a declining genre in the past few decades and Laufey wanted to share her love for it. One of the most prominent reasons that her music is popular with younger generations is because her lyrics are very relatable. Her music is applauded for being original and unique as there aren’t any mainstream artists like her.
